Suite (1972) – Walter Hartley (b.1927)
The American composer Walter Hartley received his Ph.D in composition from the Eastman School of Music and taught for his entire career at SUNY Fredonia. He has written well over 200 works, much of it for wind instruments. He writes in a neoclassical style with some use of modal and whole-tone collections. His often uses added-note chords to add color to the traditional harmonic palette. The suite has five short movements.
1. Andante maestoso
2. Scherzo – allegro moderato
3. Nocturne – lento cantabile
5. Finale: Presto
This work is great for undergraduate quartets.
